A. James Johnston Elected as President & CEO by Principals of Post & Schell, P.C.
PHILADELPHIA, PA – March 17, 2015 – Post & Schell, P.C. announced today that Principal Alfred James “Jim” Johnston has been elected by the Firm’s Principals as President and Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately. Mr. Johnston was presented for election to the Firm’s Principals by the Firm’s Board of Directors. Mr. Johnston succeeds Brian M. Peters, who stepped down in January 2015, after serving in that role for 14 years.
Over a three-decade career at Post & Schell, Mr. Johnston has been an integral part of the management and oversight of the Firm, including serving as Chair of the Firm’s national Employment & Employee Relations Practice Group and its Business Law & Litigation Department. He has also played a key role in advising the Firm’s Senior Management on employment issues, and has served on a variety of committees with other Firm Principals.
“It is an honor to lead the attorneys and staff that have been such great stewards of our clients’ legal needs for nearly 50 years,” said Mr. Johnston. “I am grateful to Brian Peters for his long-time dedication, commitment and service to the Firm as its President & CEO. I am also grateful to the Firm’s Board of Directors, Board Chair Mike Gang, and many other Principals, for their support and hard work during the transition process. As a Firm, we are well-positioned both financially and operationally.”
As President & CEO, Mr. Johnston, in addition to managing the day-to-day operations of the Firm, will collaborate with the Firm’s Board of Directors and Principals on developing and implementing the Firm’s strategic growth and operational initiatives. This includes potential geographic and practice group expansion, innovative technology and compliance programs, and oversight and management of attorneys and staff in the Firm’s seven offices. He will also continue his national employment law practice.
“I join with all of Post & Schell in congratulating Jim on his election as President & CEO,” said Michael W. Gang, who has also been serving as Acting President & CEO. “Jim’s ethics, values, reputation among clients and colleagues, and overall leadership experience make him the ideal candidate to lead the Firm.”
Mr. Johnston joined Post & Schell in 1982 as an Associate in the Firm’s Workers’ Compensation Department. He moved his legal practice into employment and employee relations-related counsel in 1986. Mr. Johnston has compiled substantial experience in defending clients against the full-range of employment discrimination claims in state and federal courts.
He represents for-profit and not-for-profit corporations, and their directors, officers and employees in multiple industries, including health care and energy, before state and federal courts, federal, state and local administrative agencies, including the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the Department of Labor (DOL) and the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission. He has successfully defended clients and secured defense victories in precedent-setting cases, and has also served as a close adviser and counselor to his clients on employment and employee issues and compliance.
Mr. Johnston is a 1980 graduate of Pennsylvania State University’s Dickinson School of Law, and is a 1977 graduate of Dickinson College.
