Marc Perry Examines Diversity in Summer Associate Programs for The Legal Intelligencer
In the February 26, 2020 article, "The Summer Associate Diversity Program as a Change Agent in Law Firms," for The Legal Intelligencer, Marc H. Perry examines how law firms can look to their summer associate programs to develop diverse attorneys and increase diversity in law firms.
Mr. Perry notes:
"While there are a variety of programs and approaches firms can embrace to meet the diversity challenge, summer associate programs are unique in that they offer an opportunity to find and develop diverse legal talent and help change a firm’s culture and approach to diversity. They also help firms develop a broader sense of community that is more welcoming to women, ethnic and racial minorities, and LGBTQIA+ attorneys and values their unique perspectives and experiences.
Perhaps the most valuable reason for firms to embrace diversity in their summer associate programs is creating a true pipeline of diverse legal talent. For example, at Post & Schell, our initial diverse 1L summer intern class in 2020 is now returning for 2L summer internships in 2021. With exposure to a variety of attorneys and practices, our goal is to have a pipeline of diverse associate candidates that will join growing practices, have familiarity with our clients, and, importantly, feel welcomed and supported by the firm."
