Bio
Karin S. Simpson is Counsel in the firm's Health Care Practice Group and counsels and represents health care providers in matters related to facility regulation, Medicare/Medicaid, state and federal compliance, fraud and abuse, and related state and federal investigations. Her clients include hospitals and health systems, post-acute and long-term care facilities, and behavioral health providers.
Ms. Simpson has deep experience in health care facility compliance, litigation, and transactions. This includes HIPAA, fraud and abuse, licensure, facility surveys and audits, change of ownership (CHOW) applications, and voluntary disclosures. In particular, she has decades of experience in the legal matters common to long-term care facilities and nursing homes.
An almost 20-year veteran of Pennsylvania's Department of Health (PA DOH), Ms. Simpson most recently served as the Department's Counsel to the Division of Nursing Care Facilities, which oversees the licensing and certification of nursing facilities in the state. During her tenure, she helped oversee legal issues associated with facility surveys and facility compliance with licensure requirements under the state Health Care Facilities Act, as well as drafted regulations and reviewed CHOW applications. She also provided counsel to the Department on its role as State Survey Agency for CMS, advising on the certification requirements that apply to facilities that participate in Medicare and Medicaid programs. Ms. Simpson also worked for Pennsylvania's Department of Military and Veteran Affairs, which owns and operates the state's six veterans homes.
Ms.Simpson served as a Judicial Clerk to the Honorable Alexander Barbieri, of the Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court.
